Applique or Backstitch-a technique where beads (usually seedbeads) are sewn onto fabric to make patterns and textures in the final design.

African Helix Stitch-a weaving technique using seedbeads that is notable for it's flexibility and the several "spines" of beads that rise up and spiral around the surface of the "base" beads.

Austrian Crystal-Also called Swarovski Crystal, it is a high quality leaded glass that has very definite facets giving the beads an intense sparkle. Imitations don't have the same "sharp" edges or the clarity and smoothness of surfaces.

Bicone-a shape of bead that is as if two cone-shapes were fused together.

Cabachon-a shape given to stones or other materials that have a domed surface and a flat bottom. Used in many types of jewelry-making such as stone-setting or seedbead work.

Granulation-a metalsmithing technique using tiny spheres of silver and attaching them to a silver base in complex designs. Most commonly seen in Balinese metalwork. One of my favorite types of beads!

Handworked glass-A method of forming beads with a torch and glass "canes". Glass beadmakers can do wonders with depth and shape and colors of glass. From florals to animals to abstract themes and designs, the potential is endless.

Heishe-a shape of bead that is like a tiny ring. Usually referring to shell or metal.

Linen cord-a round, woven linen cord that is very strong and flexible. I prefer it to leather because it does not break down as quickly.

Peyote Stitch-a technique where beads (usually seedbeads) are stitched together one by one. There are two types: flat peyote and tubular or round peyote.

Seedbeads-the tiniest beads you can imagine are used by people all over the world including Native Americans, Africans, Southeast Asians and more. Made of glass, these beads are manufactured in the Czech Republic, Japan and India. I love using them to "paint" pictures and mosaics of glass on fabric, around bottles, and to each other to create wonderful patterns and textures.

Slip knot-a type of knot used on leather or linen cord that allows the wearer to change the length of the necklace.
